After years of planning, the area of the Brno railway station is to begin to be changed in the fall. But it will only work if granite is available on the market. If not, the place will change only in the spring. Most of the sidewalks in the area will be newly made of granite paving, which will replace the current concrete surface. "The start of work depends on how quickly the construction company will be able to provide granite paving. If they secure it, I am confident that the modifications can be completed by the end of the year. If not, we would have to proceed in stages. But we certainly don't want the pre-station to be dug up over the winter," said Brno transport councilor Petr Kratochvíl (ODS), adding that he will probably make a decision next week. At the same time, he presented the plan for the modification of the station entrance already at the beginning of the summer. At that time, he wanted everything to be done during the three summer months and be done before the September elections. Not only the people of Brno perceive the railway station as one of the most unfriendly places in the city, where there are a huge number of barriers for pedestrians. In the past, railings were added between the tram platforms and sidewalks near the Letmo department store and the station building. They should have directed pedestrians into the underpass. However, many of them cross the tracks and the road in an uncoordinated manner. On the northern side, between the sidewalk near Letma to the mouth of Masarykova street and the platform, the railings will disappear and the road strip will be raised almost to their level. There will be a new pedestrian zone in this entire area, and car parking will end there. Only cast-iron posts separate the island and the sidewalk from the road.
On the opposite south side, at the point of transition from the island to the station hall, the railing will also disappear and the road will reach the level of the sidewalk. However, barriers will remain for the greater part of the building, among other things due to the passage of buses to the Grand Hotel. Turn prohibitions for drivers The changes in the front station will also significantly affect drivers, as a large part of them will no longer pass through the place. Traffic signs prohibit turning left from the viaduct towards Letm, and in the opposite direction it will not be possible to turn left into Benešova street when passing the station building, but only right under the viaduct. Brno will pay almost 12 million crowns for the modifications. The municipal company Brněnská komunikace remains to sign a contract with the selected construction company. The work should be completed within three months. Pedestrians must take into account restrictions during the construction works, which will be further specified. It is already practically certain, however, that the sidewalk between Letm and Masaryková will remain passable for the entire duration of the work. Workers will always work only in its part. Likewise, the main wide crossing from the beginning of the platforms to the station building will not be closed either. In the past, there were already many plans for the modification of the station fronts. They were talked about in 2014 and 2015 and the last time more prominently less than five years ago. At that time, Matěj Hollan, the former deputy for transport for Žít Brno, came up with an almost identical proposal to the current one from the serving municipal coalition under the leadership of the ODS.
